Ernestine Rose

American feminist activist

1810 – 1892aged 82

A rabbi's daughter from Poland who became one of the earliest and most forceful voices of American feminism, campaigning for women's property rights and suffrage decades before Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony took up the cause, and credited with coining the phrase "women's rights are human rights." A committed abolitionist and freethinker as well, she has been called the first Jewish feminist, though her own relationship to Judaism was complicated and debated. Long overshadowed by the suffragists who followed her, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1996.
