Esther Freud drew on her own childhood -- moving to Morocco with her mother as a small girl -- for Hideous Kinky, her 1992 debut novel, which was adapted into a film starring Kate Winslet and helped mark her as one of Granta's 'Best of Young British Novelists' the following year. She has since published nine more novels, been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and carries a literary lineage of her own: her father was the painter Lucian Freud, and her great-grandfather was Sigmund Freud.
