Fanny Hensel
German pianist and composer
1805 – 1847aged 41
Fanny Hensel composed over 450 works — songs, piano pieces, a string quartet, an orchestral overture — but published almost none of it in her lifetime, after her family judged public composing unsuitable for a woman; six of her songs even appeared under her brother Felix Mendelssohn's name. In 1846, over lingering family reservations, she finally published a collection as her own Opus 1. She died the following year, and her reputation has been steadily corrected since: her Easter Sonata, long credited to Felix, was reattributed to her in 2010 after new documentary analysis.
