An American jazz pianist and composer who became the first artist to play weeklong engagements as an unaccompanied solo pianist at New York's storied Village Vanguard, a room built around ensembles rather than soloists. Across more than 75 original compositions and seventeen Grammy nominations, his playing is known for a lyrical, harmonically exploratory style within the jazz piano tradition.
