G. A. Cohen
Canadian political philosopher
1941 – 2009aged 68
G. A. Cohen built a career reworking Marxist theory into a rigorous, analytically precise defense of egalitarian justice, arguing that inequality is a moral problem even when it arises without coercion. He held two of Britain's most prominent philosophy chairs — the Chichele Professorship at All Souls College, Oxford, and the Quain Professorship at University College London — and became one of the central figures in what's known as analytical Marxism.
