Gary Becker
American economist
1930 – 2014aged 83
Gary Becker applied economic reasoning to territory economists had mostly left to sociologists — discrimination, crime, family formation, addiction — arguing that even self-destructive behavior could be modeled as rational, utility-maximizing choice under constraints. A leader of the Chicago school of economics and a pioneer of human capital theory, he won the 1992 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007.
