George Axelrod
American screenwriter, producer
1922 – 2003aged 81
Wrote the Broadway play The Seven Year Itch, then adapted it for the 1955 film that gave Marilyn Monroe her signature subway-grate shot. Turned two very different novels into enduring screenplays: Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's, which brought him an Academy Award nomination, and Richard Condon's Cold War thriller The Manchurian Candidate (1962), still cited as one of the sharpest political films of its era.
