Gloria Steinem
American feminist activist and journalist
1934 – 2026aged 92
Published "After Black Power, Women's Liberation" in 1969 and became, almost overnight, the public face of American feminism's second wave — a role she used to build institutions rather than just make speeches. She co-founded Ms. magazine in 1972, the National Women's Political Caucus in 1971 to train and back women seeking office, and Take Our Daughters to Work Day in the 1990s. In 2015 she walked with fellow activists and two Nobel Peace laureates across the Korean Demilitarized Zone, still organizing into her eighties.
