Grace Paley
American writer and activist
1922 – 2007aged 84
Grace Paley wrote short fiction that found the heartbreak and comedy inside ordinary lives in the Bronx, collected in three volumes gathered into The Collected Stories, a 1994 finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. Her fiction was distinguished by an unmistakable authorial voice, and she carried the same directness into decades of feminist and anti-war activism, describing herself as "a somewhat combative pacifist and cooperative anarchist."
