Günther Anders
German-Austrian philosopher
1902 – 1992aged 90
Born Günther Stern, he took the name Anders after fleeing Nazi Germany, and spent much of his later career grappling with the two events he thought had changed what it meant to be human: the Holocaust and the atomic bomb. His 1956 book The Obsolescence of Man argued that technology had outpaced humanity's moral and emotional capacity to control it, work recognized with the Sigmund Freud Prize shortly before his death in 1992.
