György Kurtág
Hungarian composer
b. 1926age 100Living
A Hungarian composer described as one of the last living links to the postwar European avant-garde, whose spare, compressed scores draw on Bartók and Webern to pack enormous expressive force into miniature forms. He taught piano and later chamber music at Budapest's Franz Liszt Academy for decades, and for years he and his wife Márta gave recitals together on a single piano, performing selections from his ten-volume teaching collection Játékok alongside his own Bach transcriptions.
