Paired with composer Burt Bacharach from 1956 until their partnership fractured over the 1973 film Lost Horizon, he wrote the lyrics to "Walk On By," "Alfie," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" and the Oscar-winning "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," most performed by Dionne Warwick. In 2012 he and Bacharach became the first songwriting team to receive the Gershwin Prize, the nation's top honor for popular song.
