Hal Linden won a Tony Award playing Mayer Rothschild in the Broadway musical The Rothschilds before becoming a fixture of American living rooms as the title character on the sitcom Barney Miller, a role that brought him seven Emmy nominations across its run. He began his career as a big-band singer and musician, later returning to that work with a 2011 album of jazz standards.
