Harrison wrote The Stainless Steel Rat, a long-running science fiction series about a con man turned reluctant lawman, and Make Room! Make Room!, a novel about overpopulation and resource scarcity that became the basis for the film Soylent Green. Long based in Ireland and Britain, he helped found the Irish Science Fiction Association and served as co-president of the Birmingham Science Fiction Group with Brian Aldiss, known within the field for pairing rip-roaring adventure with real moral seriousness.
