A trained historian, Turtledove turned that background into a career writing alternate history alongside fantasy, science fiction, and mystery — asking, across dozens of novels since 1979, what might have followed if a single historical event had gone differently. He has published much of that work under pen names, including Eric Iverson and H. N. Turteltaub, while continuing to write into his own eighth decade.
