Helen Forrest

American singer

1917 – 1999aged 82

Born Helen Fogel, she was the featured vocalist for three of the biggest big bands of the Swing Era in succession — Artie Shaw's, Benny Goodman's, and Harry James's — a run that earned her the nickname "the voice of the name bands." Few singers of the period worked with as many top-tier bandleaders, and her recordings with all three remain touchstones of the swing sound.
