Helen Reddy

Australian and American singer and actress

1941 – 2020aged 78

Helen Reddy wrote "I Am Woman" because, as she put it, "the song I was looking for didn't exist, and I was going to have to write it myself" — it became a number-one hit and the era's defining feminist anthem, and her 1973 Grammy speech, thanking God "because She makes everything possible," made headlines of its own. The Australian-American singer placed fifteen singles in the Billboard Hot 100 top 40 during the 1970s and was the first Australian to host a primetime network variety show in the United States. She converted to Judaism before marrying her husband, Jeff Wald, in 1968.
