Helen Shapiro
British singer and actress
b. 1946age 80Living
Shapiro topped the UK singles chart twice in 1961 with "You Don't Know" and "Walkin' Back to Happiness" — while she was still fourteen years old, one of the youngest performers ever to dominate British pop that thoroughly. In 1963 the roles reversed: she headlined a tour on which the opening act was an unknown band called the Beatles. She later moved into musical theatre and jazz, touring for years with trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton's band and building a second career on a genre far from the teenage pop that made her famous.
