Hermann Kallenbach

South African architect

1871 – 1945aged 74

A Lithuanian-born architect who built a career in South Africa and became one of Mahatma Gandhi's closest friends and collaborators, their relationship growing out of a series of discussions after they met while both working there. Kallenbach's support helped sustain Gandhi during the early development of his ideas on nonviolent resistance, an unlikely partnership between a Jewish architect and a Hindu lawyer that shaped the movement's formative years.
