Hugo Gernsback

American inventor, writer, editor and publisher

1884 – 1967aged 83

A Luxembourgish-American publisher who founded Amazing Stories in 1926, the first magazine devoted entirely to science fiction, and in doing so helped name and shape the genre as it's understood today. He'd already built a career in early radio and electronics, launching Modern Electrics, the world's first magazine on the subject, and a radio station, WRNY. The Hugo Awards, science fiction's most prominent honor, are named for him.
