Ilya Ehrenburg
Soviet writer, Bolshevik revolutionary
1891 – 1967aged 76
A Soviet novelist and journalist who reported from the front lines of three wars and became one of the most widely published authors in Soviet history. His novel The Thaw gave its name to the political liberalization that followed Stalin's death, and his memoir People, Years, Life remains among his most-read works. With Vasily Grossman, he compiled The Black Book, documenting the Holocaust's destruction of Jewish communities across the Soviet Union — work Soviet authorities suppressed as "anti-Soviet" and that was not published until 1980, in Jerusalem, more than a decade after his death.
