Irving Stone

American writer

1903 – 1989aged 86

Irving Stone helped invent the modern biographical novel, dramatizing real lives with a novelist's eye for scene and character rather than a historian's caution. Lust for Life, his 1934 account of Vincent van Gogh's turbulent life and death, and The Agony and the Ecstasy, his 1961 portrait of Michelangelo, both became international best-sellers and, later, major films.
