1916 – 1991aged 75
A producer-director who turned catastrophe into a genre — The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and The Towering Inferno (1974) made him Hollywood's "Master of Disaster," both scoring big at the box office and with the Academy. Before that he created a run of 1960s science-fiction television that shaped the genre for a generation: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants.
