Isaac Abarbanel

Portuguese-Spanish Jewish businessman

c. 1437 – 1508aged 71

A statesman and financier who served the courts of Portugal, Castile, and Naples, Abarbanel used his position to intervene directly for Jewish communities under threat, unsuccessfully pleading with Ferdinand and Isabella against the 1492 expulsion of Spain's Jews before joining the exiles himself. Alongside that political life he wrote extensive Bible commentaries that combined close textual reading with contemporary philosophy, work still studied for how it bridges statecraft and scholarship.
