A rabbi's son from Poland who wrote in Yiddish for sixty years after most of its readers had been murdered, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978 for doing so. Demons, dybbuks and adulterers, rendered with total moral seriousness. He called Yiddish a language nobody spoke and everybody understood.
