Spent a life gathering literary anecdote into essay collections — Curiosities of Literature ran to eleven editions and stayed in print for over a century — that made him a fixture among the men of letters of Georgian England. Born into a Sephardic family, he never converted himself, but after an eight-year dispute with London's Bevis Marks Synagogue he had his children, including the future prime minister Benjamin Disraeli, baptized into the Church of England in 1817 — a decision that opened a path to power his own faith would have closed.
