Israel Zangwill

British Zionist author

1864 – 1926aged 62

A British novelist and playwright who became one of the closest allies of Theodor Herzl in the early Zionist movement, coining the phrase "the melting pot" as the title of his 1908 play about American immigration. He later broke with mainstream Zionism over its insistence on Palestine specifically, founding the Jewish Territorial Organization to pursue a Jewish homeland wherever one could be secured. His fiction, including Children of the Ghetto, brought London's Jewish immigrant quarter to a wide English readership.
