Wrote the book for The Band's Visit (2017), the Broadway musical about an Egyptian police orchestra stranded overnight in a small Israeli town, and won the Tony Award for it — a rare case of a musical succeeding on quiet, specific human comedy rather than spectacle. Also wrote for Boardwalk Empire and The Affair, and his 2024 play The Ally examined a college instructor caught in the fallout of a political petition, extending his interest in characters cornered by their own convictions.
