J. D. Salinger
American author
1919 – 2010aged 91
J. D. Salinger published The Catcher in the Rye in 1951 and spent the rest of his life retreating from the fame it brought him. The novel's portrait of adolescent alienation made it both wildly popular and widely controversial, and the scrutiny that followed pushed Salinger toward reclusiveness — he kept publishing shorter, quieter work through the early 1960s, then all but stopped, releasing his last piece in The New Yorker in 1965 and nothing more for the remaining 45 years of his life.
