Albertson spent decades in vaudeville before his screen career took off, and went on to become one of a small handful of performers to win the Tony, Oscar, and Emmy — the acting "Triple Crown." He won the Tony and the Academy Award for the same role, John Cleary in The Subject Was Roses, on stage and then on film, and is remembered by later generations as Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and as Ed Brown on Chico and the Man, which brought him an Emmy.
