Jack Klugman built a stage-and-screen career on rumpled, argumentative characters, from a holdout juror in 12 Angry Men to Oscar Madison, a role he took over from Walter Matthau on Broadway before winning two Emmys and a Golden Globe playing it opposite Tony Randall in the television version of The Odd Couple. He spent seven seasons as the title medical examiner in Quincy, M.E., earning four more Emmy nominations, and won his first Emmy in 1964 for a guest turn on The Defenders.
