A stand-up comedian who built a career on Yiddish-inflected delivery and pointedly irreverent, often politically incorrect material, writing and performing six one-man shows on Broadway. His 1986 show The World According to Me! won a Special Tony Award and an Emmy, and his voice work as Rabbi Hyman Krustofski in a 1991 episode of The Simpsons won him a third. A Time critic described him as speaking "with the Yiddish locutions of an immigrant who just completed a course in English. By mail."
