Jacob Neusner
American scholar of Judaism and Rabbinic literature
1932 – 2016aged 84
Wrote or edited more than 900 books on rabbinic Judaism over his career, reportedly making him one of the most published scholars in history, and imported form criticism — a method developed for studying the New Testament — into the study of rabbinic texts, reshaping how a generation of scholars read the Talmud and Midrash. The approach, and his command of Rabbinic Hebrew and Aramaic, both drew serious academic pushback, but the sheer scale of the corpus he built remains unmatched in the field.
