James Horner

American film composer and conductor

1953 – 2015aged 61

A film composer who scored more than 160 films across four decades, blending full orchestra with electronic textures and Celtic-inflected melody. He won two Oscars for Titanic, whose soundtrack became the best-selling orchestral film score of all time, and also wrote the music for Avatar, the highest-grossing film ever made — though his catalog runs deeper than those two, spanning Aliens, Braveheart, Apollo 13, Field of Dreams, and Legends of the Fall.
