A matinee idol and leading man of 1930s French cinema whose career was interrupted by the Second World War, in which he served with the Free French Forces and was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur and the Croix de Guerre. He resumed acting afterward on both sides of the Atlantic, playing suave romantic leads in Hollywood and France, and in 1991 received an Honorary César for his contribution to French film.
