Jennie Livingston

American film director

b. 1962age 64Living

A documentary filmmaker whose Paris Is Burning (1990) chronicled New York's Black and Latino gay and transgender ball culture, winning the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 1991 and later entering the Library of Congress's film registry; its influence runs directly through to FX's Pose, which she consulted on. The film has also drawn lasting criticism, including from participants, over a white director profiting from and shaping the telling of a marginalized community's story — a tension Livingston has addressed publicly rather than dismissed.
