Appeared in three consecutive Stanley Kubrick films — The Killing (1956), Paths of Glory (1957), and The Shining (1980), where he played the sinister bartender Lloyd — a run few character actors can claim with any single director. Also originated the role of Dr. Eldon Tyrell, the replicant-maker whose creation turns against him, in Blade Runner (1982), giving Turkel a hand in two of science fiction cinema's most enduring films.
