John Houseman

Romanian-born British–American actor and film producer

1902 – 1988aged 86

Houseman produced Orson Welles's most consequential early work — the Federal Theatre Project's Voodoo Macbeth and Julius Caesar, then Citizen Kane — before building an institution of his own as founding director of Juilliard's drama department and co-founder of The Acting Company. He came to acting late and almost by accident, winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1973 for playing the imperious law professor Kingsfield in The Paper Chase, a role he then carried into its television adaptation. Born Jacques Haussmann in Bucharest, he built two distinct careers on either side of the camera.
