An author and screenwriter who built a body of comic memoirs and novels turned into films, including The Extra Man (2010), which he co-wrote, and You Were Never Really Here (2017), which he produced. He created two television series for HBO and Starz, Bored to Death and Blunt Talk, and spent years as a New York Press columnist known for candid, self-deprecating essays — writing that also earned him an unlikely sideline as an amateur boxer under the ring name "The Herring Wonder."
