Gordon-Levitt started as a child actor in the 1990s — Angels in the Outfield, then playing Tommy Solomon on 3rd Rock from the Sun for five years — before leaving to study at Columbia and returning to build a career on unpredictability: Brick, Inception, Looper, and Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone's Snowden. In 2005 he founded HitRecord, an online platform for artists to collaborate on shared projects, which later won him two Primetime Emmy Awards for its interactive television work. He was born in Los Angeles to a Jewish family.
