Joseph Raz became one of the leading legal philosophers of his generation, developing an influential defense of legal positivism alongside a distinctive account of perfectionist liberalism. He spent most of his career as a professor of the philosophy of law at Oxford's Balliol College, later also teaching at Columbia and King's College London, and won the Tang Prize in Rule of Law in 2018.
