Judah Halevi
Spanish-Jewish philosopher, poet and physician
c. 1075 – c. 1141aged 66
Judah Halevi is remembered as one of the great poets of the Hebrew language, a physician and philosopher in Muslim Spain whose secular verse — wine songs, riddles, wedding poems — sits alongside religious poetry still recited in synagogue liturgy today. His Zionides, poems of longing for the Land of Israel such as "Zion, do you not inquire," gave voice to a yearning that outlasted him by centuries; another poem, "My heart is in the East," captured his own pull between the comforts of Spain and that distant homeland.
