Jules Dassin
American film director
1911 – 2008aged 96
Jules Dassin was blacklisted out of Hollywood in the 1950s after being named as a former Communist Party member, and rebuilt his career in Europe rather than abandon filmmaking. In France he made Rififi, whose wordless, half-hour jewel-heist sequence won him the Best Director award at Cannes in 1955, and in Greece he directed Never on Sunday, earning Academy Award nominations for both direction and screenplay.
