Has held the same UK parliamentary seat, New Forest East, since 1997, and became the first person to chair both of Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee and its Defence Select Committee. Pushed for the 2016 renewal of Britain's Trident nuclear deterrent and has since focused on raising defense spending to 3% of GDP. In 2020 he had the Conservative whip briefly removed after winning the ISC chairmanship over a candidate favored by Boris Johnson's government — a rare instance of a backbench committee vote overriding Downing Street's preference.
