Julian Tuwim
Polish poet
1894 – 1953aged 59
Julian Tuwim helped remake Polish poetry after independence in 1918, co-founding the experimental Skamander group with Antoni Słonimski and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and winning the Polish Academy of Literature's Golden Laurel in 1935. Alongside that adult body of work, born in Łódź and trained in law and philosophy in Warsaw, he became one of Poland's most beloved children's poets, work still read to Polish schoolchildren generations later.
