Julius J. Epstein

American screenwriter

1909 – 2000aged 91

Julius J. Epstein co-wrote Casablanca with his twin brother Philip and Howard Koch, winning the Academy Award for the screenplay — a loss he carried the rest of his life after Philip's death in 1952. He went on to two more Oscar nominations and a long career of Hollywood credits including The Man Who Came to Dinner and Cross of Iron, and his play Front Porch in Flatbush became the basis for Saturday Night, the first professional musical written by Stephen Sondheim, though its Broadway opening collapsed when the lead producer died.
