Karl Kraus
Austrian playwright and publicist
1874 – 1936aged 62
Karl Kraus spent his career turning satire into a weapon, aiming it relentlessly at the Viennese press, German culture, and Austrian politics through his self-published journal Die Fackel. His aphorisms and essays made him one of the sharpest critics of his era's hypocrisies, and he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times.
