An author, playwright, and performance artist whose writing since the 1980s helped shape how a generation talked about gender outside the male/female binary, drawing partly on her own experience transitioning and later identifying as non-binary. She has also written candidly about surviving anorexia, PTSD, and a borderline personality disorder diagnosis, work that has made her a formative if unconventional figure in queer literature and theater.
