A playwright turned filmmaker whose work returns to the difficulty of grief and family obligation, Lonergan won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Manchester by the Sea (2016), which he also directed, after earlier Oscar nominations for You Can Count on Me and Gangs of New York. His plays This Is Our Youth, The Waverly Gallery, and Lobby Hero moved from off-Broadway premieres to Broadway revivals, with The Waverly Gallery a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama.
