b. c. 1959Living
An American bassist turned record producer who worked his way through the top ranks of jazz, playing with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Bobby Hutcherson before becoming a four-time Grammy-winning producer for Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock. Over more than 100 produced albums he has also shaped records by Tracy Chapman, Melody Gardot, and Shawn Colvin. His path from session bassist to sought-after producer reflects an ear trusted equally by jazz veterans and singer-songwriters.
